Flatbed Basics

Flatbed vs Wheel Lift: Which Is Right for Your Car

A wheel lift raises one end of the car and rolls the other two wheels on the road. That works for many front wheel drive cars over short distances. A flatbed takes the road out of the equation. The car rides on the bed, so nothing in the drivetrain turns during the trip.

The choice depends on your vehicle, not on convenience. Check your owner manual if you can, and tell the dispatcher the make, model, and drive type when you call. If the manual says not to tow with the wheels on the ground, we send a flatbed. Flatbed requests come in from Midtown garages to Atlantic Station decks. Not sure which truck you need? Our process page explains how we choose.

Choose a Flatbed When

Best Fit

Vehicles That Ride Best on a Flatbed

Some vehicles should never be dragged on two wheels. These are the main ones.

Electric Vehicles

An electric motor stays tied to the wheels, so rolling them on pavement can spin the motor and strain the power electronics. Many makers, including Tesla, tell owners not to tow an EV with the wheels on the ground.

All Wheel Drive Cars

Power can reach every wheel in an AWD system, so lifting only two wheels can force the drivetrain to fight itself. A flatbed avoids that.

Low and Sports Cars

Low bumpers and front splitters can scrape on a steep ramp. On a flatbed the driver winches the car up at a gentle angle.

Motorcycles

Bikes ride upright on the bed with wheel chocks and tie downs, which is safer than any other way of moving them.

Loading

How a Flatbed Tow Works

Every load follows the same four steps.

1. Walk Around

The driver checks for damage, ground clearance, and anything that could catch on the ramp.

2. Prepare the Car

The driver puts the car in neutral or in the tow or transport mode its manual describes.

3. Winch and Strap

The car is winched onto the bed and strapped at its tie down points.

4. Drive and Unload

The driver rechecks the straps, delivers the car, and unloads it at your destination.

FAQ

Flatbed Towing Questions

It can cost more because the equipment is larger, but distance and vehicle type also matter. Ask for the total estimate when you call. Using the wrong method on an AWD or electric car can cost far more in repairs.

Some decks are too low for a standard flatbed. Tell the dispatcher the clearance and the level you are on, so we can send suitable equipment, which may be a wheel lift.

Flatbed cabs have limited seating. Tell the dispatcher how many people need a ride when you call.

Straps run from the car to the bed at secure points, and the driver checks them before leaving and again at the destination.
